The Jeep Gladiator is a solid option in the mid-size pickup truck class, providing impressive towing capacities, class-leading off-road capabilities, and a surprising level of configurability. While the Gladiator sports its own nameplate, it’s essentially a four-door Jeep Wrangler with a five and a half foot bed. However, the Gladiator lacks the on-road refinement that some rivals provide and only truly shines when off-roading. Additionally, subpar fuel efficiency ratings and notable wind and road noise at highway speeds reduces some appeal. For 2025, Jeep has made several updates but essentially carried over the Gladiator from the previous model year. Jeep has discontinued the manual transmission, leaving the eight-speed automatic as the sole option. Additionally, like the Jeep Wrangler, the Gladiator now comes standard with power locks and windows on the base Sport trim, a late but welcomed update. Jeep has also made several other minor updates, including some reshuffling in trim levels, available features, and pricing. The Gladiator remains a solid option in the class, offering the essentials of the mid-size pickup with a remarkable level of off-road capabilities, albeit with a bit less on-road refinement than some rivals.
The Jeep Gladiator offers attractive styling providing a rugged design inside and out. The exterior design of the Gladiator is similar to that of the iconic Jeep Wrangler, with a boxy profile and muscular styling. The interior of the Gladiator offers a similarly rugged design, similar to most rivals, with a functional layout and plethora of physical controls. However, the Gladiator utilizes a 12.3” infotainment touchscreen display that comes with Jeep’s latest software “Uconnect® 5”. Additionally, the Jeep’s infotainment system is proving to be one of the best currently available in the class, with quick responses and a relatively intuitive design. The interior also feels sturdy and well put together with a mix of hard and soft-touch plastics, that should hold up well to use and abuse. Additionally, the higher trim levels offer more premium material selections, albeit at a notable markup in cost. The cabin of the Gladiator is spacious for the class, offering more rear passenger space than most rival crew-cab pickup trucks. However, the Gladiator is limited to a single bed length and cabin size, whereas some rivals offer options depending on your needs. The Gladiator also offers a good degree of configurability, standing out as the only option in the class with removable doors and roof. The pick-up is available with the standard soft top roof and an optional hardtop, which comes standard on the higher trim levels. Both options are relatively easy to remove and install, but allow a notable amount of window and road noise to permeate into the cabin.
The ride quality of the Gladiator is oriented to excel at off-roading, and so, compromises the on-road demeanor of the Jeep. The Gladiator is an excellent option for an off-road capable pickup truck, providing a rugged suspension that can easily traverse rough and rocky terrain. The Gladiator falls a bit short of the nimbler Jeep Wrangler, but remains comparable and is expected from the longer wheelbase. However, the Gladiator’s longer wheelbase provides a bit of an improvement in the ride quality of the Wrangler. Additionally, Jeep offers the Rubicon and Mojave trims, which come standard with copious skid plates, rock-crawling axle ratios, shock absorbers, and an abundance of off-road-oriented design features. However, the incredible off-road capabilities result in a less refined on-road driving demeanor that requires more attention than most rivals. The Gladiator is far from unruly, but some rivals prioritize on-road refinement in lieu of off-roading capabilities. Additionally, the steering of the Gladiator, while well-weighted, lacks the precision that most rivals offer. However, the Gladiator is the best option for a pickup truck that excels off the road while remaining agreeably comptent on the road.
The Jeep Gladiator is offered with a single powertrain: a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. With the discontinuation of the six-speed manual transmission, the sole arrangement pairs the V6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission that directs power to the four-wheel drivetrain. While the Gladiator is rated to tow 6,000 pounds as standard, the towing capacity can be increased to up to 7,700 pounds, when properly equipped, rivaling pick-ups like the Chevy Colorado. The Gladiator also offers a 5-foot bed with a maximum payload capacity starting at 950 pounds and, when properly equipped, reaching 1725 pounds. The bedsides are fairly low, making loading or accessing cargo easier than some rivals. The Gladiator offers a combined fuel efficiency of around 18-19 mpg, depending on the configuration, package options, and trim level selected. However, even the highest rated Gladiator ranks last amongst mid-size pickup trucks, albeit not by much.
