However, the Explorer provides an unremarkable interior that fails to compete with newer, more upscale, rivals. For 2024, Ford has discontinued the hybrid powertrain option. However, Ford will continue to offer the hybrid powertrain for the Police Interceptor model, which is unavailable to the public. Additionally, Ford has opted to carry over the rest of the Explorer lineup, with a redesign expected for the 2025 model year. The Ford Explorer, once a pioneer of the three-row SUV class, finds itself facing stiff competition with more upscale rivals that provide a more refined SUV. However, for those seeking solid handling and performance, the Explorer comes out ahead as the clear choice. The Ford Explorer offers muscular exterior styling, with potent powertrains to match its rugged design. However, the Explorer misses the mark on its interior, providing an uninspired design and lackluster passenger space. While the front row is reasonably spacious, the passenger decreases as you move further to the back. Additionally, while the cabin of the Explorer varies with trim selection the more desirable material selections are found on the higher, more expensive, trims. However, the interior of the Ford doesn’t aim to provide upscale accommodations, instead focusing on providing utility and functionality.
The ride quality of the Ford Explorer is remarkable, with the standard suspension offering a balanced mix of sporty handling and comfort. The Explorer is unique in the class, providing an eagerness while cornering that few rivals provide. The Explorer offers a surprising degree of athleticism for a three-row SUV, maintaining a remarkable degree of composure during more athletic maneuvers. Additionally, the suspension of the Explorer does an exceptional job of minimizing most road imperfections, providing a comfortable ride over most road surfaces. Upgrading to the ST trim opens the doors to a sport-tuned suspension that further sharpens the SUV’s reflexes, with handling capabilities more comparable to the performance SUV class. Additionally, the Explorer ST comes standard with the more muscular V6 as standard, providing the power to make full use of its handling capabilities. However, the Explorer offers remarkable handling and performance regardless of the trim selection, with the base four-cylinder providing more power than most of the competition.
The base powertrain is a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The turbocharged four-cylinder delivers solid performance and provides remarkable acceleration, earning a 0-60 mph time of only 6.0 seconds when equipped with all-wheel drive. Additionally, the turbo-four provides enough low-end torque for quick off-the-line acceleration and for most highway maneuvers. However, more hot-footed drivers will want to opt for the optional V6 and sport-tuned suspension. The more powerful powertrain provides a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that produces 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. The more muscular V6 engine significantly amplifies the fun factor, making full use of its capable suspension. Both powertrains are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive as the standard arrangement. Additionally, all-wheel-drive is available for an additional $2,000. The automatic transmission operates fairly seamlessly but struggles to find the right gear at prolonged lower speeds. The Explorer also provides solid tow ratings, delivering a maximum capacity of 5,600 pounds when properly equipped. Additionally, a towing package is available on the four-cylinder that ups the capacity to a remarkable 5,300 pounds. The Explorer is an excellent option for those seeking a three-row SUV with balanced handling and strong acceleration.
